Atmos Secures Funding for 470-MW Wind Farm, 400-MW Battery Project in Australia

SYDNEY: Atmos Renewables has reached financial close on two large clean energy projects in Australia: a 400-MW/1,600-MWh battery in Queensland and a 470-MW wind farm in Western Australia. Both are backed by the federal Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS).

Why Atmos says these projects matter?

Atmos CEO Nigel Baker said the two projects answer a clear market need. As electricity demand grows and older plants retire, the grid needs more firming and generation capacity, and Teebar and Parron Maam Marang are meant to supply both.

Teebar battery in Queensland

The Teebar battery energy storage system (BESS) will be built about 60 km (37.3 mi) west of Maryborough, close to Powerlink’s Teebar Creek substation in the Fraser Coast region. It will use technology from Finland’s Wartsila Energy Storage.

The battery will charge when supply is plentiful and discharge when demand rises, with four hours of storage capacity. Atmos plans to switch it on in March 2028.

The wind farm will sit in Badgingarra, around 200 km north of Perth in the northeastern wheatbelt. It will use 78 Vestas V162-6.2 MW turbines, which the manufacturer is due to deliver in 2027. Commissioning is planned for 2028.

The plant’s output is already contracted under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Synergy, the Western Australian government-owned power retailer.

Who is behind Atmos?

Igneo Infrastructure Partners established Atmos in 2020. The company owns more than 1.5 GW of installed and under-construction wind, solar and storage capacity in Australia. That portfolio includes the 316-MW Hornsdale Wind Farm in South Australia.

Atmos said it will keep ownership of both Teebar and Parron Maam Marang once they are commissioned.

Another project nearing completion

A year ago, Atmos also reached financial close on the 100-MW/400-MWh Merredin battery in Western Australia. The project is under construction and, according to the report, is due to be commissioned shortly.
